Southeast Missouri Attractions

Council Bluff Lake

Council Bluff Lake, the biggest lake in the Mark Twain National Forest, was constructed when a dam was built across the Big River in northern Iron County, Missouri. The lake is roughly 440 acres in size, with a maximum depth of 87 feet. While fishing is a major pastime at the lake, it is also widely known for swimming, having a 54,000-square-foot sand swim beach that is particularly popular during the summer. Throughout the year, a hiking track that around the lake is also popular.

Johnson's Shut-Ins

Looking for a one-of-a-kind tourist spot? Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park is rich in history!

Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park and the adjacent St. Francois Mountains are exceptional places to explore because of their wilderness traits and geology. Its rough aspect makes it ideal for hiking, picnics, swimming in the shut-ins, discovering nature, or simply resting.

Elephant Rocks State Park

The elephant rocks, carved from 1.5 billion-year-old granite, are massive boulders that stand end-to-end like a circus elephant train. The rocks have produced formations that excite geologists, history enthusiasts interested in historical quarrying, and youngsters who love to climb on and between the boulders.

Picnic tables are strewn amid the trees and provide ideal areas to have a picnic meal or rest while seeing the park's unique geological structures.

Fort Davidson Historic Site

Arcadia Valley in Iron County is now a tranquil setting in one of Missouri's most picturesque places. However, in September 1864, the valley was the site of one of the state's greatest and most bloody conflicts, the Battle of Pilot Knob. Confederate Maj. Gen. Sterling Price led an army of 8,000 troops against the Union garrison at Fort Davidson at Pilot Knob during the engagement.

The Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site preserves Fort Davidson as well as the site where so many Confederate and Union troops died. A tourist center and museum interprets the fight with exhibitions, video presentations, and a battle diorama made of fiber optics. The playground, picnic area, and hiking route on the property are all enjoyable places to spend time.

Taum Sauk Mountain

The highest point in Missouri is located in Taum Sauk Mountain State Park. This is an excellent spot to experience the magnificence of the St. Francois Mountain Region, with magnificent pathways and spectacular overlook places. Climb the observation tower or hike the three-mile circle route past the tallest waterfall region. The Ozark Trail includes Taum Sauk Mountain.

Climb to the top of Taum Sauk Mountain State Park to truly be on top of Missouri. The park's 7,500 acres feature the state's highest peak. Hikers will enjoy the park's hickory forests and rocky glades, which are located in the St. Francois Mountains.
